In September 2012 Andrew & Adele Southerton were captivated by the vision of planting a new church in Wellington that loved Jesus and loved the city.

This conviction and the support of other churches (in Wellington and other parts of New Zealand) led them to move to Wellington in May 2014. The church began meeting in the Southerton's living room as Wellington Evangelical Church with 15 people (9 adults + 6 kids).  This small group shared a vision for a new church that was warm, engaging and taught the Bible clearly and faithfully.

By the end of 2014 the living room was no longer able to hold the little growing church. So Wellington Evangelical moved to a tramping club in Mount Victoria in February 2015. In October 2015 space was an issue again as they had outgrown the tramping club. The opportunity arose to move the church to the Community Hall at St Mark's Church School opposite the Basin Reserve. At the same time the church launched publicly as City on a Hill Evangelical Church and continued the same mission of being a church that loves Jesus and loves Wellington.

As God has continued to bless and grow our church we moved into the chapel at St Mark’s, launched Night Church and more recently Morning Church has been meeting at Te Whaea - the National Dance & Drama Centre.

Over time God has gathered to our church many Wellingtonians from all walks of life with a desire to reach out to their friends and neighbours with the life changing news of Jesus.

What the future holds is in the sovereign hands of God. It's our plan and our prayer that God will continue to grow City on a Hill as more and more people come to know, love and trust Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.

As we grow, we long to begin new congregations, plant more churches and see men and women trained up and released into the work of sharing the great news of Jesus.

We'd love for you to join us in that mission!
