Thanks heaps for looking us up and we’d love to meet you on Sunday at one of our church gatherings! We think that visiting a new church can be pretty daunting, especially if you haven’t been in a while or have never gone to a church before. Hopefully this will give you an idea of what to expect at City on a Hill and will make your visit an enjoyable experience.
What are the details for Sunday?
We have two services each Sunday: Morning Church & Night Church.
For more about Times + Locations click here.
Who can come?
Everyone is welcome at City on a Hill. You don’t need to be a member or even someone who would call themselves a Christian. At church you will meet people from all walks of life – kids, students, young adults, families and beyond.
What do you do at church on a Sunday?
Our Sunday gathering is designed to be simple, straightforward and focused around the Word of God (the Bible). Each week there are songs, prayer, community announcements, a Bible reading (we have Bibles you can use to follow along) and a talk on the passage that is read. There is usually at chance before or after church there to grab a drink and a little something to eat while you meet some friendly people and make some new friends.
What is there outside Sunday?
We have plenty on during the week. The main thing are our Community Groups that explore the Bible in a smaller group setting. They give a chance to get a different experience of the church community. For more information check out the Community Groups Page.
What sort of church is City on a Hill?
We’re a gathering of regular people from all walks of life who want to love Jesus and love Wellington. We are not involved with a particular denomination but are a part of the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches. We read the Bible as God’s word for us and we want to share its life changing message with the city around us. Some of the more technical words people might use to describe our church are evangelical, reformed and missional.
What do you have for kids?
Kids are most welcome at church on a Sunday. When we can physically meet together they will probably prefer our Morning Church as it offers a kids programme for children 1-12yrs old. We like to begin the service with everyone all together. After the first group of songs the kids head out to their programmes with the Kids Church leaders who are wearing the red shirts. You are most welcome to join them to see what is going on or to help your little one settle in.
Currently we have a kids programme that runs for pre-school/creche (1-5yrs old) and primary school (5yrs-12yrs) children. We also have a creche area where you can still hear what is going on in church via an audio feed.
If you have any questions about the kids, please just ask one of the leaders in a red shirt.
What about my teenager?
On Friday nights during term time we run a youth group for teenagers. It’s a super friendly group where they’ll fit right in. Each Friday they spend time learning from the Bible as well as hanging out and playing games.
Many of our teenagers head along to Morning Church where they have a Youth Bible Study during the service. For more details contact us.
Will I be asked for money?
No. At City on a Hill we don’t pass the plate! We would love for you to freely come and hear the great news about Jesus. Our church expenses are covered by the donation of our regular attenders and supporters.
What should I wear?
Come along in what ever you feel comfortable wearing. There is no dress code! Generally most folks at City on a Hill don’t ‘dress up’ for church but wear the sort of casual gear they’d have on when heading out for a coffee with friends.
Who is Jesus?
At City on a Hill we’re convinced that Jesus is the ‘light of the world’. To find out more about what this means, check out this page or we’d love to welcome you along to our ‘LIfe Course’ as we think about what’s life all about and unpack Jesus’ claim to have come to the world to give life and life to the full. You can find out about our next course here.
